Sri Lanka delivered a remarkable team performance, defeating the West Indies by 81 runs in their second match of the ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup 2025.
Opting to bat first after winning the toss, Sri Lanka set an impressive total of 166 for five in their allotted 20 overs. This score marks their highest at the ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup, surpassing their previous best of 162 against Malaysia in their opening Group A match.
In response, the West Indies struggled to build momentum, losing wickets steadily. Sri Lankan left-arm spinner Chamudi Praboda was pivotal, wreaking havoc on the Windies’ batting lineup.
Sri Lanka will conclude their Group A campaign against India on Thursday, while the West Indies need a strong performance against the host nation, Malaysia, to secure a spot in the Super 6 by finishing in the top three.
Sri Lanka’s Dominance
Two key partnerships were crucial in propelling Sri Lanka to a formidable total. Openers Sumudu Nisansala and Sanjana Kavindi quickly amassed 48 runs without loss during the powerplay, with Nisansala launching an impressive six over midwicket off Selena Ross.
Although Nisansala fell to a chop-on in the seventh over, captain Manudi Nanayakkara continued the momentum, forming a fruitful 48-run second-wicket partnership with Kavindi. Nanayakkara contributed 37 runs, while Dahami Sanethma added an unbeaten 31 runs off 25 balls, solidifying their team’s commanding position.
After a promising start, the Windies crumbled in the powerplay, losing three wickets and dimming their chase hopes as Praboda continued her stellar form, taking out a key batter. Aseni Thalagune supported with the crucial wicket of captain Samara Ramnath, who managed 24 runs off 23 deliveries, marking Sri Lanka’s second victory in the tournament. Sri Lanka veteran cricketer Thilakaratne Dilshan’s daughter Limansa Thilakaratne took 2 for 7.
