The 2024 T20 World Cup’s Super Eight round has begun with a match between South Africa and America. America won the toss and, as usual, chose to invite South Africa to bat first.
This has been a common trend in the tournament, with the team winning the toss opting to field first.
It has become a trend to invite the opposing team to bat
The outcome of the matches in the first round was primarily influenced by the team batting second, as they consistently secured victory.
However, whether the Super Eight round will follow the same pattern is uncertain. The initial matches were characterised by challenging conditions for batters, with minimal advantage on those pitches. Scoring runs was arduous due to the pitch conditions rather than the bowlers’ skill.
Looking ahead to the Super Eight round, the conditions of the West Indies stadiums may transform. Traditionally, these stadiums favour both batsmen and fast bowlers. Consequently, whether to bat first or not, even after winning the toss, should be based on a thorough assessment of the pitch.
South African batters batted well
South African opener Quinton de Kock scored a valuable 74 runs, which included five sixes and seven fours. De Kock became the backbone of the African team, with Aiden Markram, Heinrich Klaasen, and Tristan Stubbs providing valuable support.

South Africa undefeated
South Africa has emerged as the dominant force in the T20 World Cup this year, showcasing an impeccable performance by winning all five matches.
Their remarkable success has secured them a spot in the semi-finals, making them a formidable contender. Their unprecedented winning streak will keep other teams on edge as they continue asserting dominance in the tournament.
Kagiso Rabada said after the match
Following the match, South African fast bowler Rabada said in a press conference, “The USA have been chasing well, and that’s why they chose to bowl first. I must commend our batting lineup, especially Quinton.
And at the end of the day, we got a respectable total on the board, or more than a respectable total on the board, which allowed us to put them under pressure with the ball.
We got a couple of early wickets, and then Andres batted extremely well and gave them a good chance, and they came close in the end. No matter who they’re playing for, you can never write any opposition off. The USA have been playing well; they beat Pakistan. So, hats off to the way they’re playing.”
When asked about playing on different surfaces during the World Cup, Rabada responded, “You have to adjust on the go.
We are professional cricketers and have encountered variable conditions throughout our careers. I guess we should have an idea of how to adapt.
But if it’s your day, then it’s your day, and if it’s not, then it’s not. But you want to win more days than you lose.”
