Ashwini Vaishnav, India’s Minister of Railways, proudly announced that India is preparing to operate the world’s most potent hydrogen-powered train engine, boasting a capacity of 1200 horsepower. The first trial run of this train engine is planned to travel from Jind Sonipat to the Haryana region. As a South Asian nation, India’s contribution to the green hydrogen energy revolution is a point of great pride for the world.

Distinct Goals by 2030

The hydrogen-powered train will eventually operate on routes including the Nilgiri Mountain Railway, the Kalka Shimla Railway, and the Darjiling Himalayan Railway. This is a good example of how India has successfully grasped the subject of energy security. Furthermore, India aims to lead among nations with green hydrogen energy by 2030. The initiative for hydrogen energy projects was launched on January 4, 2022, with the approval of the National Green Hydrogen Mission. India states approximately six hundred thousand job opportunities exist in green hydrogen production sectors. It is projected that 2047 could be a peak year in India’s energy transition. China Holds the Top Spot in Hydrogen Energy Usage

Previously, only Germany, France, China, and the UK had the honour of creating hydrogen fuel-powered train engines. These engines had reported horsepower ranging between 500-600. However, India’s hydrogen-powered train engine boasts a remarkable 1,200 horsepower. Future plans include utilising this power for transportation, industry, and energy production. Currently, China ranks first in the world regarding hydrogen energy usage. The shift toward carbon neutrality in future global energy consumption identifies green hydrogen as a vital and essential energy source. Its necessity and usage are crucial across all aspects—environmental, technological, and economic.

Addressing Climate Change Challenges

Green hydrogen can be viewed as one of the best triggers to find solutions to climate change challenges facing the global environment.
